Things to do in Xiamen — Gulangyu Island, seaside roads and Fujian's easiest city

Xiamen is the seaside gateway to Fujian — an island city of colonial-era lanes, palm-lined beaches and one of China's most relaxed street cultures, anchored by the UNESCO-listed Gulangyu Island just a short ferry ride offshore. It's also the launch pad for the region's big trips: Quanzhou's maritime Silk Road heritage, the Fujian Tulou earth buildings and Wuyishan's tea mountains are all within reach. Here's where we'd spend your time in the city, and what we'd honestly skip.

Historic villas and sea views on UNESCO-listed Gulangyu Island, Xiamen Must see Half day
Gulangyu Island
Xiamen's headline act and a UNESCO World Heritage site — a car-free island of century-old consulate villas, garden lanes, piano music and sea-view rooftops, five minutes across the water. It rewards slow wandering more than any checklist. Ferry tickets are limited and sell out; we book them in advance and time the crossing to beat the day-trip crowds.
Nanputuo Temple beneath Wulao Peak in Xiamen Must see 2–3 hours
Nanputuo Temple
A thousand-year-old Buddhist temple complex climbing the slopes of Wulao Peak, with incense courtyards, lotus ponds and a short hill trail that opens onto views over the campus and the sea. It sits right beside Xiamen University's famously pretty grounds, so the two combine into one easy cultural morning. Free entry, and gorgeous light in the late afternoon.
Island Ring Road and Huangcuo beach coastline in Xiamen Worth it Half day
Island Ring Road & Huangcuo Beach
Xiamen's signature coastal drive — a palm-lined road hugging the island's southern shore, with Huangcuo and Zengcuo'an beaches, boardwalks and photo stops the whole way. It's the city at its most relaxed: rent bikes for a stretch, walk the sand, watch the kites. We fold it into the afternoon after Nanputuo, when the light on the water is best.
Arcade architecture on Zhongshan Road pedestrian street, Xiamen Worth it 1–2 hours
Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street
Old Xiamen's main artery — a long pedestrian street of pastel arcade buildings from the 1920s, running from the city center down toward the ferry piers. Come after dark when the facades light up and the side lanes fill with life. It pairs naturally with the Gulangyu day: island by daylight, arcades and harbor lights in the evening.
Shapowei art zone and old harbor district in Xiamen Optional 1–2 hours
Shapowei Art Zone
Xiamen's old fishing harbor turned creative quarter — murals, indie shops and cafés wrapped around a small tidal bay, with the arts center's rooftop giving a fine view over the boats. It's young, photogenic and easygoing rather than a major sight, which is exactly its charm. Slots neatly between Xiamen University and the seaside route.
Historic coastal artillery at Hulishan Fortress in Xiamen Optional 1–2 hours
Hulishan Fortress
A late-Qing coastal battery on the headland at the start of the Island Ring Road, built around a giant 19th-century Krupp cannon still aimed out to sea. The clifftop position gives wide views over the strait, and the story of China's coastal defenses is well told. An easy add-on before the beach stretch if your group enjoys history.

Verified halal food in Xiamen — 100+ options across the island city

Xiamen eats well, and Muslim travelers can too — the city has a solid spread of verified halal restaurants, from Arabic kitchens near the harbor to Xinjiang and Northwest-style places across Siming, Huli and Jimei. The catch is geography: the sights are spread along the coast and Gulangyu itself has very limited halal choices, so meal planning matters more here than in most cities. From our 100+ verified options, we match every lunch and dinner to your day's route, so the island day never ends in a food-court compromise. New to eating halal in China? Start with our halal Chinese food guide.

Prayer planning in Xiamen
Xiamen has a working mosque, and this coast carries more Muslim history than most travelers expect — an hour away, Quanzhou was the great port of the maritime Silk Road, where Muslim merchants settled a thousand years ago and their heritage still stands. In Xiamen itself the practical question is timing: the ferry crossing, the island walking and the seaside route all pull the day in different directions. We plan each day around the actual prayer timetable and arrange suitable private prayer space on the island route, at scenic areas and on transfer days, so prayers shape the schedule instead of being squeezed into it.

When to go to Xiamen — weather by season on Fujian's coast

Xiamen has one of the kindest climates of any major Chinese city — subtropical, sea-cooled and green all year. The planning questions are two: the summer typhoon season, which can disrupt the Gulangyu ferry, and the long golden stretch from October onward, which is when the island city is simply at its best.

Best season
Autumn
Oct–Dec. The sweet spot — warm, dry, sunny days with sea breezes, ideal for the ferry crossing, the beaches and long evenings on Zhongshan Road. Typhoon season has passed and the light is superb for photos. This is the window we recommend first, and it books up around holidays.
Winter
Jan–Feb. One of the mildest big-city winters in China — cool rather than cold, with plenty of clear days and no snow. The sights are quiet, hotel value is excellent, and a light jacket usually suffices. Chinese New Year is the one crowded, pricier exception — we plan around it.
Spring
Mar–May. Green, flowering and mild, with the campus and temple gardens at their prettiest. Expect some misty, showery stretches as the warm season builds — we keep indoor stops like museums and the arcades ready to swap in, so a wet morning never costs you a day.
Summer
Jun–Sep. Hot, humid beach weather — fine if you like it tropical, and the sea breeze helps. July to September is typhoon season on this coast: most days are unaffected, but ferries pause when storms pass, so we keep island days flexible and watch the forecast for your group.
Not sure when to travel? Tell us your available dates. We'll advise on crowd levels, weather, and the best window for your group.

"Xiamen was such an easy city to enjoy. The ferry to Gulangyu, the seaside walks, everything was arranged at a pace our older members could manage, and halal meals were confirmed before we even landed. We never had to think about where to pray — it was already in the day's plan."

Common questions

Xiamen Muslim travel FAQ

Quick answers to the questions Muslim travelers ask most before visiting Xiamen.

Is there halal food in Xiamen?
Yes — we maintain 100+ verified halal options across the city, from Arabic and Xinjiang restaurants in Siming to Northwest-style places in Huli and Jimei. One honest caveat: on Gulangyu Island itself halal choices are very limited, so meals around the island visit need planning rather than luck. We match every lunch and dinner to your day's route and hotel area, and confirm the restaurants before you travel.
Does Xiamen have a mosque?
Yes — Xiamen has a working mosque, and daily prayers are easy to arrange when your route passes the city center. Xiamen also sits next to one of the deepest layers of Muslim history in China: Quanzhou, about an hour up the coast, was the great port of the maritime Silk Road, where Muslim traders settled a thousand years ago. On our routes we plan each day around the actual prayer timetable and arrange suitable private prayer space at scenic areas, on the island route and on transfer days.
How many days do I need in Xiamen?
Two to three days covers Xiamen itself comfortably — Gulangyu Island and the old streets on day one, Nanputuo Temple and the Island Ring Road beaches on day two, with Jimei School Village as an easy third day. But we recommend 5–6 days for the region, because Xiamen is the gateway to Fujian: the UNESCO-listed Tulou earth buildings, Quanzhou's Muslim heritage and Wuyishan's tea mountains are all within easy reach and are what turn a city break into a real trip.
How do I get to Xiamen from Malaysia or Singapore?
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN) is the arrival point, conveniently close to the city — most hotels are within 30–45 minutes of the terminal. Xiamen is one of southern China's main international gateways, with flight options from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore that change seasonally, including nonstop services in many periods. We confirm the current best routing when we plan your dates, and airport pickup is included on every tour.
When is the best time to visit Xiamen?
October to December is Xiamen at its best — warm, dry, sunny days that are perfect for the ferry crossing, the beaches and long seaside walks. Winter is remarkably mild for China, so January and February work well too. Spring is green and pleasant with some misty, showery stretches. Summer is hot and humid, and July to September is typhoon season on this coast — trips still run well, but we keep the schedule flexible and watch the ferry forecast on island days.
Can I visit the Fujian Tulou or Quanzhou from Xiamen?
Yes — both are classic add-ons and both deserve real time. The UNESCO-listed Fujian Tulou earth buildings are roughly a 3-hour drive each way, so they work as a long full-day trip or, better, an overnight route. Quanzhou is about an hour away by road or rail and is one of the most important Muslim heritage cities in China — the old maritime Silk Road port. Our most popular Xiamen packages combine the city with one or both, with halal meals arranged along the way.
