Because Suzhou's beauty is gardens and canals, weather shapes the trip more than in most cities. No season is bad — but there are clearly better windows, and one rainy stretch to plan around.

Sep–Nov. The window we recommend first — clear skies, comfortable walking, osmanthus perfuming the gardens, golden gingko later on. The October holiday week is the one stretch to plan around.
Spring
Mar–May. Plum blossom in early March, wisteria in April, ideal walking weather throughout. Crowds peak around the Qingming and May Day holidays, so we reserve garden entries early.
Summer
Jun–Aug. Hot and humid, with June–July plum rain. Gardens early, the Suzhou Museum and teahouses midday, Shantang Street after dark — and the reward is lotus season in the Humble Administrator's Garden ponds.
Winter
Dec–Feb. Quiet and mild-cold — the gardens empty out, and a rare snowfall turns Suzhou into an ink painting. Chinese New Year is the exception; we plan around it.
