When to go to Luoyang — peony season and the four-season capital
Luoyang has proper four-season weather — hot summers, cold winters, and two lovely shoulder seasons. But one month rewrites the calendar: April, when China's peony capital blooms and the whole city celebrates its flower. If your dates are flexible, that's the decision to make first; everything else follows from it.

Apr–May. Peony season — the gardens peak in April during the annual peony culture festival, and the Sui-Tang night city is at its most alive. The one trade-off is crowds: this is Luoyang's busiest window, so we book hotels and Longmen tickets well ahead and schedule the gardens for early morning.

Sep–Oct. Clear, dry and comfortable — the best all-round sightseeing weather of the year. Ideal walking conditions at Longmen and the temple courtyards, and the season we'd pick for a Laojun Mountain day, when the summit views are most reliable.

Most travelers fly into Zhengzhou or Xi'an — both well connected internationally — and finish by high-speed rail: Luoyang is under an hour from Zhengzhou and roughly an hour and a half from Xi'an, arriving at Longmen station near the grottoes. When is the best time to visit Luoyang?
April, if you can — Luoyang is China's peony capital, and the city blooms for the annual peony culture festival, with gardens at their peak and the old town at its liveliest. It's also the busiest window, so hotels and tickets need booking early. Outside peony season, autumn (September–October) offers the clearest, most comfortable sightseeing weather, while summer is hot and winter cold but quiet. Is Shaolin Temple close to Luoyang?
