Things to do in Xi'an — Terracotta Army, Muslim Quarter and the Ancient Wall
Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi province and the ancient Chang'an — capital to thirteen dynasties and the starting point of the Silk Road. For Muslim travelers it's the friendliest famous city in China: the Hui community has lived and cooked around the Great Mosque for centuries. Here's where we'd spend your time, and what we'd skip.
Must seeHalf day
Terracotta Army
Thousands of life-size warriors guarding China's first emperor — a UNESCO site and one of the great archaeological finds anywhere. It sits about an hour outside the city; we handle tickets, timing and the transfer.
Must see2–3 hours
Muslim Quarter + Great Mosque
The heart of Hui Xi'an — old lanes of halal food stalls around one of China's oldest mosques, still active today. Best in the evening when the whole quarter comes alive; for once, the street food is yours to enjoy.
Worth it2–3 hours
Ancient City Wall
The Ming-era wall still rings the old city complete — wide enough on top to walk or cycle, with views over the gates and rooftops. Cycling a stretch is the classic way to do it; we time it for softer light.
Worth itEvening
Big Wild Goose Pagoda + Great Tang All Day Mall
The Tang-dynasty pagoda anchors Xi'an's strongest evening route — the Great Tang All Day Mall lights up in full Tang style, with music fountains and street performances. Our usual after-dinner plan.
Optional2–3 hours
Shaanxi History Museum
The best single room for understanding Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang China — the dynasties that all ruled from here. Entry needs advance reservation and slots go fast; we book yours early.
Optional2–3 hours
Huaqing Palace
Tang imperial hot-spring palace at the foot of Lishan Mountain, on the same road as the Terracotta Army — the natural pairing for that day. Seasonal evening show subject to schedule.
Lower priority — you can skip these if time is limited
Squeezing Mount Hua into a short Xi'an stay
Huashan is spectacular but it's a full, demanding day — two hours out, cable car queues, real hiking. Bolted onto a two-day visit it flattens everything else. If the mountain matters to you, give it its own day on a longer route.
Assuming the whole city is halal because of the Muslim Quarter
The quarter is the exception, not the rule — outside it, Shaanxi classics are often made with pork, including the roujiamo most shops sell. The halal original is beef, in the quarter. We keep your meals on the right side of that line.

Prayer planning in Xi'an
Xi'an is one of the easiest cities in China to keep your prayers — the Great Mosque in the Muslim Quarter is one of the country's oldest and remains fully active, and the Hui community runs mosques across the old city. We build a mosque visit into the route where timing suits; out at the Terracotta Army or on the wall, we plan the day around the prayer timetable and arrange private space — prayers shape the schedule, not the other way around.
Need help checking halal food for your group?
Send us your dates, hotel area, group size, and dietary needs. We will help verify suitable halal restaurants and meal options before your trip.
Xi'an has four real seasons and no bad one — the Terracotta Army pits are indoors, and the Tang-lit evenings work year-round. The windows below shape how we'd plan your days.
Best season
Autumn
Sep–Nov. Clear, mild and the best light of the year — ideal for cycling the wall and the Lintong day. The October holiday week is the one stretch to plan around.
Spring
Mar–May. Warming weather and blossoms in the parks — the other easy window for the full outdoor route. Book the museum early in peak weeks.
Summer
Jun–Aug. Hot — we flip the schedule: the pits and museums in the cooler hours, then the Muslim Quarter and the Tang lights after dark, when Xi'an is at its best anyway.
Winter
Dec–Feb. Cold, dry and quiet — short queues at the Terracotta Army, and the old city occasionally under snow. Chinese New Year is the exception; we plan around it.

"Xi'an was the first city in China where we never once worried about food. We prayed at the Great Mosque, ate our way through the Muslim Quarter, and the Terracotta Army day was perfectly organised. The children want to go back."

Quick answers to the questions Muslim travelers ask most before visiting Xi'an.
Is the food in Xi'an's Muslim Quarter really halal?
Yes — the Muslim Quarter has been run by Xi'an's Hui Muslim community for centuries, and it's one of the few famous food streets in China where halal is the norm, not the exception. Outside the quarter it's a different city: classic Shaanxi dishes are often made with pork. We keep your meals on the right side of that line — 200+ verified options citywide, booked ahead.
Can I pray at the Great Mosque of Xi'an?
Yes — the Great Mosque in the Muslim Quarter is one of China's oldest and most famous mosques and remains an active place of worship, so Muslim travelers can join prayers there. We build it into your route where timing suits, and for the rest of the day — the Terracotta Army, the wall, the museums — we plan around the prayer timetable and arrange suitable private space.
How many days do I need in Xi'an?
Three days covers the classics — the Terracotta Army and Huaqing Palace, the City Wall and Muslim Quarter, the Shaanxi History Museum. With five to six days you can slow the pace and add day trips, or simply give the food street the evenings it deserves. Xi'an rewards not rushing.
How do I get to Xi'an from Malaysia or Singapore?
Fly into Xi'an Xianyang International Airport — there are flight options from both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore on many dates, direct or with one easy connection through a major Chinese hub. Xi'an is also a high-speed rail hub, so arriving by train from Beijing, Luoyang or Chengdu works well too. We pick you up either way.
When is the best time to visit Xi'an?
September to November — clear, mild weather for the wall and the outdoor sights, and the best light of the year. Spring is the other easy window. Summer is hot, so we flip the schedule toward mornings and the Tang-lit evenings; winter is cold but quiet, and the Terracotta Army pits are indoors anyway.
Can we combine Xi'an with Beijing or the Silk Road?
Yes — Xi'an pairs naturally in both directions. Eastward: Beijing and Xi'an in six days, or add Shanghai in nine; Luoyang's Longmen Grottoes are one high-speed hop away. Westward, Xi'an is where the ancient Silk Road began — routes run through Lanzhou and Dunhuang in seven days, or all the way to Kashgar in eleven. Halal confirmed in every city.
