Dali sits in a mild highland valley, so no season is truly off-limits — but each one feels different on the ground. Here's our honest take, including when we tell our own clients to come.

Spring
Mar–May. Dry, sunny, and the clearest views of Cangshan Mountain across Erhai Lake. Early spring afternoons can be windy — Dali is famous for it — but that's a windbreaker problem, not a trip problem. The best overall window.
Summer
Jun–Aug. Rainy season — usually short showers rather than all-day rain, and the whole valley turns intensely green. Noticeably cooler than most of Southeast Asia; bring a light jacket for evenings.
Autumn
Sep–Nov. The rain fades and skies clear again — a very close second to spring. One warning: avoid China's National Day week (Oct 1–7), when the old towns and lake road get seriously crowded.
Winter
Dec–Feb. Plenty of blue-sky days and the famous winter seagulls on Erhai Lake, but mornings and evenings are cold and the wind can be strong. Pack proper layers.

When is the best time to visit Dali?
