How many days do I need in Kunming?
2 to 3 days for the city itself: one full day for the Stone Forest, one for the Western Hills, Dianchi Lake and the Yunnan Ethnic Village, and a slower morning for Green Lake and the old streets. Most travelers then continue into Yunnan — Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, Xishuangbanna or the Yuanyang rice terraces — which is why 4 to 6 days or more in the region is the sweet spot.
Will altitude be a problem in Kunming?
Rarely. Kunming sits at about 1,900 m — high enough to make the sun feel strong, but low enough that almost nobody needs adjustment time. It only becomes a real consideration if you continue to Shangri-La, which lies above 3,000 m; on that route we schedule the lower cities first and keep the high-altitude days unhurried, with the flexibility to slow down if anyone in the group feels it.
