Things to do in Guilin — the Li River, Yangshuo and the Longji terraces

Guilin is China's most famous karst landscape — limestone peaks rising straight out of rivers and rice fields. The best of it splits three ways: the city sights along the rivers and lakes, the Li River cruise down to Yangshuo, and the Longji Rice Terraces a day trip to the north. Here's where we'd spend your time as a Muslim traveler, and what we'd honestly leave out.

Li River cruise boat passing karst peaks between Guilin and Yangshuo Must see Half day
Li River Cruise
The reason Guilin is on every list of China's landscapes — a slow cruise downstream to Yangshuo past mist-wrapped karst peaks, water buffalo and fishing villages. The scene on China's 20-yuan note is along this stretch. We time the boat, lunch and prayers as one plan.
Layered Longji Rice Terraces on the mountainside north of Guilin Must see Full day
Longji Rice Terraces
Centuries-old terraces stacked up entire mountainsides, dotted with Zhuang and Yao wooden villages — mirror-bright with water in late spring, gold at harvest in early autumn. A full day trip from Guilin; we handle the mountain transfer and meal planning.
Bamboo raft drifting down the Yulong River near Yangshuo Must see 2–3 hours
Yulong River Bamboo Rafting
Yangshuo's quieter answer to the Li River — a gentle two-person raft drifting between karst hills and rice paddies, with no engine noise. The best slow hour in the countryside; easy to pair with cycling lanes or Moon Hill nearby.
Elephant Trunk Hill arching over the Li River in central Guilin Worth it ~1 hour
Elephant Trunk Hill
Guilin's city symbol — a karst hill drinking from the Li River through a perfect stone arch. Compact and central, it slots neatly into a city morning together with the riverside walk and old town streets.
Illuminated pagodas on the Two Rivers and Four Lakes night route in Guilin Worth it Evening
Two Rivers & Four Lakes
Guilin's connected waterway loop at its best after dark — lit pagodas, arched bridges and lakeside promenades, with the twin Sun and Moon Pagodas glowing over Shanhu Lake. Walk it free, or add the night boat if the evening is clear.
Duxiu Peak rising inside the walled Jingjiang Princes' City in Guilin Worth it 2–3 hours
Duxiu Peak & Jingjiang Princes' City
A walled Ming-dynasty princes' compound in the middle of Guilin, with Duxiu Peak — the "Solitary Beauty Peak" — rising inside it. A short, steep climb earns the best panorama of karst towers marching across the city.
Impression Liu Sanjie outdoor night show on the Li River in Yangshuo Optional Evening show
Impression Liu Sanjie
A night performance staged on the Li River itself, with twelve lit karst peaks as the backdrop and hundreds of local performers on the water. Weather-dependent and seats sell out in peak season — we book ahead if it fits your Yangshuo evening.
Ruyi Peak cableway and viewing platforms above the Yangshuo karst Optional 2–3 hours
Ruyi Peak Cableway
A cable car up to walkways and platforms floating above the Yangshuo karst — the easiest way to see the peaks from above without a hike. Best on a clear day; skip it in low cloud and spend the time on the Yulong River instead.
Lower priority — you can skip these if time is limited

Prayer planning in Guilin
Guilin has an active city mosque serving its long-established Hui community, and daily prayers are straightforward to plan in the center. On Li River, Yangshuo and Longji days a mosque won’t be nearby at prayer time — so we build prayer stops into the schedule and arrange clean private prayer space at your hotel, restaurant or along the route.

Best time to visit

When to go to Guilin — rivers, mist and golden terraces

Guilin rewards most of the year, but the rivers and the terraces each have their moment. April to October is the main window — and the season you pick changes what the karst looks like: mirror-bright paddies in late spring, full green rivers in summer, golden terraces and clear skies in autumn.

Spring
Mar–May. Green and atmospheric as the rains return — misty peaks, rising rivers, and the Longji terraces filling with water into mirror steps by late spring. Pack a rain layer and keep plans flexible.
Summer
Jun–Aug. Hot and humid with the rivers at full volume — the Li River cruise at its most dramatic, best started early to beat heat and crowds. Afternoon showers pass quickly; school-holiday crowds peak in July–August.
Best season
Autumn
Sep–Nov. The sweet spot — clearer skies, mild days and reliable river levels, with the Longji terraces turning gold in late September and October. Avoid Golden Week (Oct 1–7) and it's Guilin at its best.
Winter
Dec–Feb. Cool, grey and quiet with lower water levels — the karst still photographs beautifully in mist, and prices are at their lowest. Workable for a relaxed city-and-Yangshuo trip, but not peak scenery.

Common questions

Guilin Muslim travel FAQ

Quick answers to the questions Muslim travelers ask most before visiting Guilin.

Is it easy to find halal food in Guilin?
Yes, with planning. Guilin has 65+ verified halal options — Hui-run beef noodle kitchens, lamb clay-pot houses and northwest-style halal restaurants in both Guilin city and Yangshuo. The catch is that the famous street version of Guilin rice noodles is usually not halal, and signage is mostly in Chinese, so we plan each day's meals around verified restaurants on your route.
Is Guilin Muslim-friendly?
Yes, with planning. Guilin has an established Hui Muslim community, an active city mosque and verified halal restaurants in both the city and Yangshuo — a smaller scene than Xi'an or Guangzhou, but a real one. English is limited outside hotels, which is exactly the gap we close: verified restaurants, prayer arrangements and an English-speaking guide throughout.
Can I do the Li River cruise as a day trip from Guilin?
Yes — it's the classic Guilin day. The cruise runs downstream from Guilin to Yangshuo through the best of the karst scenery and takes most of the morning, so timing matters. We book the boat, arrange a verified halal lunch around Yangshuo, plan prayer times around the cruise, and have your driver waiting at the Yangshuo end — no scramble for transport back.
How do I get to Guilin?
Fly into Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWX), which connects through major Chinese hubs like Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing, or take the high-speed train — Guangzhou to Guilin runs in roughly three hours, which makes Guilin an easy add-on to a southern China route. We include airport or train station pickup on arrival.
What is the best time to visit Guilin?
April to October is the main window. Autumn (September–November) is the sweet spot — clearer skies, mild temperatures and reliable river levels, with the Longji Rice Terraces turning gold in late September and October. Spring and summer bring fuller, greener rivers with misty peaks and more rain; winter is cool, grey and quiet with lower water levels, but also the cheapest season.
How many days do I need in Guilin?
3 to 4 days works well. One day for the city — Elephant Trunk Hill, the old town area and the Two Rivers & Four Lakes night view; one day for the Li River cruise and Yangshuo; and a third for the Longji Rice Terraces. A fourth day fits Yulong River bamboo rafting, the Ruyi Peak cableway or the Impression Liu Sanjie night show at a relaxed pace.
