Maoyan River is a water-activity scenic cluster west of Zhangjiajie city, best known for its whitewater rafting — a roughly 20-kilometer course with a 66-meter drop — plus Jiutian Xuannv Cave, calm flat-water boat tours and a hot spring area. Tickets are sold per attraction, starting from 20 RMB, with Jiutian Cave at 75 RMB. For most Muslim travelers, Maoyan River works best as a separate summer day trip or part of a west-route itinerary, not as an add-on to a Zhangjiajie National Forest Park day.
This guide explains what each part of the scenic area is like, the officially listed ticket prices, how to get there, and how to plan halal food, prayer and modest clothing around a water-based day.
What Is Maoyan River?
Maoyan River is not a single gate with one ticket. It is a cluster of separate attractions along the river in Yongding District and neighboring Sangzhi County, and each is a different kind of day:
- Maoyan River rafting — the headline activity: around 20 km of rapids with a 66-meter total drop, according to the Hunan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism. You will get wet. Best for travelers in good physical condition, mainly in summer.
- Jiutian Xuannv Cave — a large karst cave with a stable, cool temperature year-round. The gentlest option, suitable for elderly travelers and families in any season.
- Flat-water boat tour (Kuzhu River) — calm river scenery above the dam, sometimes called the “Hundred-Mile Gallery.” No rapids, no getting wet; the most relaxed way to see the canyon.
- Heart-shaped Hot Spring — a riverside hot spring area, mainly a cool-season activity. Muslim travelers should note that hot springs are shared bathing environments; whether this fits your comfort and modesty standards is a personal decision, and private options should be confirmed directly with the scenic area.
If your group only has one day and mixed ages, the cave plus flat-water tour is usually the more comfortable combination; rafting suits a younger or more adventurous group.
Official Ticket Prices (Verified July 2026)
The prices below are what the official Maoyan River website (maoyanhe.cn) listed when we checked on July 23, 2026. Prices and products can change — treat the official page and hotline as the final word.
| Attraction | Official Price | Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Jiutian Xuannv Cave | 75 RMB | Not included |
| Heart-shaped Hot Spring | 128 RMB | Not included |
| Yuhuang Grottoes | 65 RMB | Not included |
| Fenglianxi | 35 RMB | Not included |
| Sangzhi Red Army Experience Park | 20 RMB | Included |
Three things the official page makes clear:
- Rafting tickets are not publicly priced online. Prices you see on international booking platforms are third-party offers, not the official rate. Confirm the current rafting price and availability through the official channel before paying anyone.
- Insurance is optional for most tickets and can be purchased at the scenic area if you want it.
- Buy through official or confirmed channels. The scenic area warns that tickets from unconfirmed third-party sellers may not guarantee entry. The official consultation and rescue hotline is 0744-8787999.
How to Get There
Maoyan River is west of Zhangjiajie city, in the direction of Maoyan River Town, with some attractions (such as the Red Army Experience Park) closer to Sangzhi County. It is a different direction from Wulingyuan and the National Forest Park.
- Private transfer or chartered car is the most reliable option, especially for families, elderly travelers and anyone doing rafting (you will want a guaranteed dry ride back).
- Scenic direct buses have operated from the city in past seasons, but schedules are not fixed. Do not build your day around a bus you have not confirmed — call the scenic area hotline (0744-8787999) before you travel.
- Public transport involves transfers and local buses; workable for flexible independent travelers, tiring for groups with children or luggage.
Is the Rafting Suitable for Your Group?
Families with children
Rafting means water, rapids and a wet change of clothes at the end. Check age and safety requirements with the scenic area before booking for children, and be honest about whether everyone in the group actually wants to get soaked. If not, the cave and flat-water tour deliver the same canyon scenery dry.
Elderly travelers
Most elderly Muslim travelers will be happier with Jiutian Cave or the flat-water tour. The cave stays cool in summer, paths are managed, and the pace is gentle. Rafting is a physical activity with no easy exit once you start.
Summer travelers
Rafting is promoted as a summer cooling activity, and summer is when it is most reliably available — it is seasonal and water-dependent, so confirm operation for your dates through the official channel. Bring sun protection, a full change of clothes, waterproof bags for phones and documents, and water-friendly shoes. Summer is also when Zhangjiajie is hottest overall; our Zhangjiajie summer tips for Muslim travelers cover how to pace those days.
Muslim Travel Planning for Maoyan River
Halal food
Maoyan River is a rural scenic area, not a city food environment. Do not count on finding halal food at scenic-area stalls. Eat a proper breakfast before departure, carry packaged snacks, and plan your real meal for after you return — our guide to halal food in Zhangjiajie lists verified options in the city.
Prayer timing
Rafting and river tours occupy the middle of the day, and there are no dedicated prayer facilities in the scenic area. The practical pattern: pray before departure, plan for the possibility that midday prayer happens at a rest stop or after the activity, and time your return so evening prayer is unhurried. A day at Maoyan River should be planned around prayer times, not squeezed between them.
Modest clothing for rafting
Rafting in regular modest clothing can become heavy and uncomfortable when soaked. Quick-dry, loose-fitting layers work far better than cotton or abaya-weight fabrics. Bring a complete dry change of clothes, a towel, and a plan for where to change — and confirm changing facilities with the scenic area if this matters to your group.
How Maoyan River Fits a Zhangjiajie Itinerary
Maoyan River is a full or half day in its own direction. It does not combine well with the National Forest Park or Tianmen Mountain on the same day, and treating it as a quick add-on is the most common planning mistake.
It works best as: a day-3 or day-4 activity after the headline mountains — see our 3-day Zhangjiajie itinerary for where a flex day fits; part of a west-route plan toward Xiangxi — our Aizhai Bridge and Xiangxi route guide covers that direction; or a summer cooling day for groups staying longer in Zhangjiajie.
How HalalChinaTrips Can Help
We are not the scenic area and not an official ticket platform. What we do: confirm which ticket product actually matches your route, check current rafting availability for your dates through official channels, arrange private transfers with a dry ride back, and plan the day so halal meals and prayer times are already built in. If rafting turns out to be wrong for your group, we will say so and plan the cave or flat-water alternative instead.
Tell us your dates and group on our Plan My Trip page and we will tell you honestly whether Maoyan River belongs in your itinerary.
Tickets, reservations and queues — we handle all of it.
Our 5-day Zhangjiajie & Fenghuang private tour covers the Avatar mountains, Tianmen Mountain and Fenghuang Ancient Town — with airport pick-up, private driver and verified halal restaurants arranged for every day.
