Laosicheng Village Overview

The ruins of Laosicheng are located in Laosicheng Village, Lingxi Town, more than 20 kilometers east of Yongshun County, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. They were originally named Fushicheng. Laosicheng was the political, economic, military and cultural center of Yongshun Peng Tusi from the fifth year of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty (1135) to the sixth year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty (1724). It is divided into the inner Luocheng and the outer Luocheng, with eight crisscrossing streets and ten alleys, densely populated, and prosperous shops. There are records in history books that “there are 3,000 households in the city and 800 households outside the city”. Laosicheng is the material carrier of the Tusi system and a living specimen of China’s ancient ethnic regional autonomy system. It was announced as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units in 2001. In September 2010, the ruins of Laosicheng were included in the first batch of national archaeological site park project list. On July 4, 2015, the “Chinese Tusi Heritage” represented by the Yongshun Laosi City Ruins, the Tangya Tusi City Ruins in Enshi, Hubei, and the Hailongtun Tusi Ruins in Zunyi, Guizhou was listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

Muslim-Friendly Travel Notes

Is Laosicheng Village Suitable For Muslim Travelers?

Yes, Laosicheng Village can be suitable for Muslim travelers, especially for guests who enjoy cultural heritage, quiet local routes, and deeper historical stories. However, it is not the easiest attraction to visit independently because halal food, prayer timing, transport, and explanation of the site should be arranged in advance.

This attraction is best for Muslim families, couples, small private groups, and travelers who prefer meaningful cultural travel rather than crowded commercial streets.

Good For Cultural Travelers

Laosicheng Village is suitable for travelers who want to understand Xiangxi beyond famous photo spots. It gives context to Tujia culture, ancient governance, and the historical background of western Hunan.

Better With Guide Support

Many ruins and cultural details are not easy to understand without explanation. A local guide can help travelers connect the site with the Tusi system, Tujia heritage, and nearby Xiangxi attractions.

Needs Food Planning

Halal food options are limited around the site itself. We can check nearby halal restaurants before the trip, provide a restaurant list, and then design the day’s route based on the restaurant selected by your group.

Route Options

Choose a Laosicheng Village Visit Style That Fits Your Group

There is no single best way to visit Laosicheng Village. The right plan depends on your cultural interest, available time, transport, food needs, walking comfort and whether Laosicheng is a standalone heritage stop or part of a wider Xiangxi route.

Half-Day Heritage Visit

Focus on the core heritage area, ancient city remains, Tusi cultural background and key photo points.

Slow Cultural Visit

Allow more time to understand the Tusi system, Tujia culture, archaeological remains and the meaning of the World Heritage site.

Furong Town + Laosicheng Route

Combine Furong Town and Laosicheng if your itinerary allows enough transport time and your group wants both scenic old town views and deeper cultural history.

Highlights

Main Highlights

Tusi Heritage Remains

Laosicheng Village is important because it preserves the memory of the Tusi system in Xiangxi. The site helps visitors understand how local ethnic communities, regional rulers, and imperial administration interacted in mountain regions of southwest China.

Tujia Culture Context

The visit is not only about ruins. It is also about understanding Tujia history, local settlement patterns, ancestral traditions, and how Xiangxi developed as a culturally distinct region.

Quiet Village Atmosphere

Compared with Fenghuang or Furong, Laosicheng Village feels quieter and less commercial. This makes it a good choice for travelers who prefer a slower cultural route, fewer crowds, and more time for explanation.

Heritage Photography

Laosicheng Village can be used for calm cultural photography: ancient remains, village paths, green hills, heritage details, and documentary-style travel images. It is not a flashy scenic spot, but it offers a deeper atmosphere.
