Attractions guide

What to see in Xiangxi

Six stops make up the core of every Xiangxi route. Honest recommendations based on what Muslim travelers from Southeast Asia and the Middle East actually value — built from HalalChinaTrips' on-the-ground experience in the region.

Fenghuang Ancient Town Must see Full day
Fenghuang Ancient Town
A 1,300-year-old riverside town built almost entirely on stilts, linked by stone bridges and the century-old Rainbow Bridge. A full day covers the old streets, the riverside walk, and North Gate Tower, with lanterns along the Tuo River lit each evening after dark.
Furong Ancient Town Must see Half–full day
Furong Ancient Town
A cliffside village built around a 200-meter waterfall that drops through its center. Two to four hours covers the main viewpoints and the stone steps beside the falls, and the stop is often combined with a Mengdong River rafting trip earlier in the day.
Biancheng Chadong Scenic Area Worth it Half day
Biancheng Chadong Scenic Area
A border town on the Qingshui River, where the water marks the line between Hunan and Chongqing. Two to three hours covers the wooden ferry crossing and the riverside street on either bank.
Zuolong Gorge Worth it Half day
Zuolong Gorge
A narrow limestone canyon with waterfalls and plank walkways bolted to the cliff face. Three to four hours covers the full walk, and the gorge runs several degrees cooler than the surrounding towns.
Shibadong Village Worth it 2–3 hours
Shibadong Village (Eighteen Cave Village)
A Miao hillside village recognized nationally as the birthplace of China's targeted poverty alleviation program. Two to three hours covers the stone paths through the village and the local embroidery and silverwork workshops.
Aizhai Wonder Tourist Area Worth it Half day
Aizhai Wonder Tourist Area
Home to the Aizhai Bridge, one of the highest suspension bridges in the world, spanning a canyon over 300 meters deep. Three to four hours covers both the glass-floor observation deck above and the switchback road at the base of the canyon.
Lower priority — you can skip these if time is limited

Best time to visit

When to go

Xiangxi is open year-round. Here's what each season looks like — and when we recommend visiting.

Spring
Mar–May. Mild and green, with river mist over the ancient town in the early morning. Rain is common — pack a light waterproof layer.
Summer
Jun–Aug. Warm and humid, ideal for the Mengdong River rafting season. Zuolong Gorge and Furong Town's waterfall are at their fullest.
Best season
Autumn
Sep–Nov. Clear skies, cooler air, and the Tuo River at its calmest for evening cruises. Our top recommendation for photography and walking the ancient town without summer crowds.
Winter
Dec–Feb. Quiet and cold, with occasional light snow over the stilted rooftops. Fewer visitors, though some rafting and river-cruise routes pause.
Not sure when to travel? Tell us your available dates. We'll advise on crowd levels, weather, and the best window for your group.
