Things to do in Nanjing — Purple Mountain, the Qinhuai River and China's ancient capital

Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu and one of China's great ancient capitals — seat of six dynasties, the first Ming emperors and the Republic of China, sitting on the Yangtze River between Purple Mountain and the longest city wall ever built. Few cities pack this much history into such a walkable, green, tree-lined setting, and it's barely 90 minutes from Shanghai by rail. Here's where we'd spend your time, and what we'd honestly skip.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum on Purple Mountain in Nanjing Must see 2–3 hours
Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum
The resting place of modern China's founding father, climbing Purple Mountain in a grand stairway of blue-and-white memorial halls with the whole city spread below. It's Nanjing's most visited site and genuinely moving even if you know little of the history. The 392 steps are real exercise — we pace the morning around them and reserve entry in advance.
Confucius Temple and Qinhuai River night lights in Nanjing Must see 2–3 hours
Confucius Temple & Qinhuai River
Nanjing's classic night scene — lantern-lit banks, arched bridges and Ming-style facades reflected in the Qinhuai River, with the old Confucius Temple at its heart. Go after dark, when the painted boats glide under the lights; the optional river cruise is short and worth it. We time dinner nearby so the evening flows without backtracking.
Stone elephants on the Sacred Way at Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum in Nanjing Worth it 2–3 hours
Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum
The UNESCO-listed tomb of the first Ming emperor, reached along the Sacred Way — an avenue of 600-year-old stone elephants, camels and warriors under a canopy of old trees. It shares Purple Mountain with the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, so the two combine naturally into one unhurried heritage day, gorgeous in autumn colors and plum-blossom season alike.
Nanjing Museum galleries in Jiangsu, one of China's largest museums Worth it Half day
Nanjing Museum
One of China's largest and finest museums — imperial treasures, jade burial suits, Ming porcelain and a recreated Republic-era street you can walk through. Entry is free but reservation-only and slots go fast; we book it with your passport details ahead of time. Ideal as a second-day anchor, and a lifesaver on a rainy or scorching afternoon.
Zhonghua Gate section of the Ming-era Nanjing city wall Optional 1–2 hours
Nanjing City Wall & Zhonghua Gate
Nanjing's Ming-era wall is the longest surviving city wall in the world, and Zhonghua Gate is its masterpiece — a vast fortress gate with layered courtyards built to trap invaders. Walk a stretch of the ramparts for rooftop-level views over the old city. It slots easily into a final morning, paired with Xuanwu Lake on the wall's northern side.
Gardens and historic offices of the Presidential Palace in Nanjing Optional About 2 hours
Presidential Palace
Five centuries of power in one compound — Ming princely gardens, the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom's palace, and the offices where the Republic of China was governed. It's the best single stop for Nanjing's modern-history chapter, and the classical Xu Garden inside is a quiet surprise. Pairs well with the nearby 1912 block for a light city stroll after.
Lower priority — you can skip these if time is limited

Prayer planning in Nanjing
Nanjing's Muslim heritage runs deep — this was the home port of Zheng He, the great Ming-dynasty Muslim admiral, and the old city keeps working mosques serving a community that has been here for centuries. Daily prayers are straightforward when your route passes the center; the planning work is the rest of the day, since the sights stretch from Purple Mountain in the east to Zhonghua Gate in the south. We time each day around the actual prayer timetable and arrange suitable private prayer space at scenic areas and on transfer days, so prayers shape the schedule instead of being squeezed into it.

When to go to Nanjing — weather by season in Jiangsu's capital

Nanjing has vivid four-season weather with one famous extreme: summer. The city is one of China's legendary "furnace" cities, which makes timing — and daily scheduling — matter more here than in most destinations. The reward is two genuinely beautiful shoulder seasons, when the mountain and the tree-lined boulevards are at their best.

Best season
Autumn
Oct–Nov. Clear, dry and comfortable — the best all-round window. Nanjing's famous parasol-tree avenues turn gold, Purple Mountain glows with autumn color, and evenings on the Qinhuai River are cool enough to linger. Book early for late October; it's the city at its most photogenic.
Spring
Mar–May. Blossom season — plum flowers blanket Purple Mountain's slopes from late winter, then cherry and magnolia take over as the city greens up. Mild and lovely, though showers come in stretches; we keep the Nanjing Museum ready to swap in so a wet morning never costs you a day.
Summer
Jun–Aug. Seriously hot and humid — this is furnace-city season. We flip the schedule to match: Purple Mountain's shaded paths early, museums and long halal lunches through midday, then the Qinhuai River lights and city-wall breezes after dark, when Nanjing is at its best anyway.
Winter
Dec–Feb. Chilly, damp and quiet — hotel prices drop and the big sights are crowd-free. An occasional snowfall turns the city wall and Ming Xiaoling into the most beautiful scenes of the year, and late winter brings the first plum blossoms to the mountain. Pack proper layers.

What Muslim travelers say

From families in Singapore to tour groups from Malaysia — here's what HalalChinaTrips guests experienced.

Muslim family on a HalalChinaTrips city tour in China
★★★★★
"Nanjing was the surprise of our China trip. The kids loved the city wall and the boat lights on the Qinhuai River, and for us the best part was eating at halal restaurants that have been in the city for generations — real Nanjing food, fully halal, no guesswork. Prayer times were already in the schedule every single day."

Tour group photo during a HalalChinaTrips China route
★★★★★
"Our group covered several cities on one route and the organization never slipped. In Nanjing the halal meals were confirmed before we arrived, the guide adjusted the pace for our older members on the mausoleum steps, and prayer stops were built into every long day without us having to ask. Very smooth from start to finish."

Common questions

Nanjing Muslim travel FAQ

Quick answers to the questions Muslim travelers ask most before visiting Nanjing.

Is there halal food in Nanjing?
Yes — and Nanjing is special here. Beyond the 100+ verified options we maintain, the city has its own century-old halal restaurants serving Jinling (Nanjing) cuisine, including halal versions of the duck dishes the city is famous for. Most cluster around the old city and Qinhuai area rather than one single street, so we match each day's halal meals to your route and hotel area instead of leaving you to search on the day.
Does Nanjing have a mosque?
Yes. Nanjing has a long-established Muslim community with working mosques in the old city, and daily prayers are easy to arrange when your route passes the center. The main sights, however, spread from Purple Mountain in the east to the city wall in the south — so we plan each day around the actual prayer timetable and arrange suitable private prayer space at scenic areas and on transfer days.
How many days do I need in Nanjing?
Three to four days is the comfortable window. Day one covers Purple Mountain — Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum and the UNESCO-listed Ming Xiaoling — with the Confucius Temple and Qinhuai River lights in the evening. Day two takes the Nanjing Museum and the Presidential Palace, and a third day adds the city wall and Xuanwu Lake at a slower pace. Nanjing also sits on China's fastest rail corridor, so most guests continue to Suzhou, Shanghai or Hangzhou on a longer route.
How do I get to Nanjing from Malaysia or Singapore?
Nanjing Lukou International Airport (NKG) is the arrival point, about 40–50 minutes south of the city center. Flight options from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore change seasonally — some periods have direct services, otherwise one easy connection through a major hub works well. Many travelers also arrive by high-speed rail from Shanghai in about 90 minutes. We confirm the current best routing when we plan your dates, and airport or station pickup is included on every tour.
When is the best time to visit Nanjing?
Autumn — roughly October to November — is Nanjing at its best: clear skies over Purple Mountain and the city's famous parasol-tree avenues turning gold. Spring is the blossom season, with plum flowers on the mountain slopes from late winter and a green, mild city through May. Summer is seriously hot — Nanjing is one of China's famous "furnace" cities — so July and August days start early and finish with the Qinhuai River lights after dark. Winter is quiet and occasionally snowy, which suits the city wall beautifully.
Is Nanjing close to Shanghai and Suzhou?
Very — Nanjing sits on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed corridor, so Suzhou is about an hour away and Shanghai roughly 90 minutes by bullet train. That's exactly why our most popular Nanjing routes are multi-city: Nanjing + Shanghai in 4 days, or Nanjing + Suzhou + Shanghai in 6, with halal meals confirmed in every city and all rail tickets and transfers handled by us.
