What to see in Beijing — and what to skip
Beijing has more famous sights than any short trip can hold, so choosing well matters more than seeing everything. Here's what we recommend to Muslim travelers from Southeast Asia and the Middle East — and what we'd honestly leave out.
Must seeHalf–full day
Forbidden City (Palace Museum)
China's imperial palace for nearly 500 years — grand halls, courtyards, and the single most important stop for first-time visitors. Advance reservation with passport details is required, and it is closed most Mondays.
Must seeFull day
Great Wall (Mutianyu / Badaling)
The reason many travelers come to China. Mutianyu is usually more comfortable for families, with cable car options; Badaling is the most famous section. Either way, plan a full day with an early start — halal lunch is arranged in advance.
Must see1–2 hours
Tiananmen Square
The world's most famous public square, directly in front of the Forbidden City — the natural starting point of any Beijing route. Like the Forbidden City, it now requires an advance reservation (1–7 days ahead), plus passport security checks on entry.
Worth it2–3 hours
Temple of Heaven
The iconic Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and a huge imperial worship complex, set in a relaxed park where locals practice tai chi in the morning.
Worth itHalf day
Summer Palace
China's best-preserved royal garden — Kunming Lake, Longevity Hill, and the painted Long Corridor. Pairs well with the Great Wall on the same day.
Worth it2–3 hours
Shichahai & Hutong Area
Lakeside views, old Beijing alleyways, and a relaxed evening atmosphere — the best way to see the city's traditional side after a day of major sights.
OptionalFull day
Universal Beijing Resort
A world-class theme park that children love — but it takes a full day from your China trip. Best for families staying 4+ days in Beijing. Food inside the park needs careful planning for Muslim visitors.
Optional2–3 hours
National Museum of China
One of the world's largest museums, right on Tiananmen Square. Free but reservation-dependent and often fully booked — worth it for history lovers if slots are available.
Lower priority — you can skip these if time is limited
Wangfujing Snack Street
Famous, but most food stalls are not halal — for Muslim travelers, the Niujie halal district is a far better food destination. Wangfujing is still fine for an evening walk and shopping.
Beijing Zoo
If pandas are on your list, Chengdu's panda base offers a much better experience — many of our travelers combine Beijing with Chengdu in one route instead.

Tell us your dates and group size — we'll sort out the itinerary, tickets, reservations, and halal meals.
Beijing is one of the easiest big cities in China for halal food — the Niujie district alone has served the city's Muslim community for centuries, and several halal restaurants here have been open for generations. We re-check every option before you arrive, so you always know where your next meal is.

Prayer planning in Beijing
Beijing has several active mosques, including Niujie Mosque — founded in 996 and the city’s oldest and largest, in the heart of the Niujie halal district. We build daily prayer times into your route, and arrange suitable private prayer spaces at your hotel or restaurant when sightseeing takes you far from a mosque. A Friday prayer or mosque visit can also be included in your itinerary.

Beijing works year-round, but the seasons feel very different on the ground. Here's our honest take — including when we tell our own clients to come.
Spring
Mar–May. Mild, dry, and comfortable for long walking days at the Forbidden City and Great Wall. Early spring can bring the occasional windy, dusty day — late April onward is safest.
Summer
Jun–Aug. Hot, humid, and the year's biggest crowds. If this is your only window, we book tickets early and start sightseeing by 8am to beat both heat and queues.
Best season
Autumn
Sep–Nov. Beijing at its best — clear skies, cool air, and golden ginkgo streets from late October. One warning: avoid China's National Day week (Oct 1–7) unless you enjoy queues.
Winter
Dec–Feb. Cold — often below 0°C — but quiet, and the Forbidden City under snow is genuinely worth braving the chill. Pack serious warm layers.

Quick answers to the questions Muslim travelers ask most before visiting Beijing.
Is Beijing Muslim-friendly?
Yes. Beijing has more than 200 verified halal restaurants, several active mosques including Niujie Mosque, and major attractions that are well set up for international visitors. With halal meals and prayer times planned in advance, Muslim travelers can visit Beijing comfortably.
Is there a mosque in Beijing?
Yes. Niujie Mosque in Xicheng District is Beijing's oldest and largest mosque, located in the heart of the Niujie halal district. Beijing has several other active mosques as well. A mosque visit or Friday prayer can be built into your itinerary.
Where can I find halal food in Beijing?
The Niujie area in Xicheng District has Beijing's highest concentration of halal restaurants. Long-established halal restaurants such as Turpan Restaurant, Donglaishun, Hongbinlou and Jubaoyuan serve halal Beijing classics. We verify restaurant options before every trip, so you'll know exactly where to eat at each stop.
Can Muslim travelers try halal Peking duck?
Yes. Long-established halal restaurants in Beijing, such as Hongbinlou, serve halal roast duck — so you don't have to miss Beijing's most famous dish. Booking ahead is recommended, and we can arrange it as part of your trip.
Do I need to book Beijing attractions in advance?
Yes — and this catches many visitors out. The Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square both require real-name reservations 1–7 days ahead with your passport, and neither sells same-day tickets. The Lama Temple and National Museum also use online booking. We handle all reservations for our guests as part of every Beijing itinerary.
Mutianyu or Badaling — which Great Wall section is better?
Mutianyu is usually more comfortable for families and first-time visitors, with cable car and chairlift options and generally smaller crowds. Badaling is the most famous section with easier rail access, but it is often busier. Both can be arranged as a private day trip with a halal lunch planned in advance.
How many days do I need in Beijing?
3 to 4 days is recommended. Two days cover the essentials — the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall and the Summer Palace. A third day adds the Temple of Heaven plus the Lama Temple, Olympic Park or the National Museum at a relaxed pace.
