Attractions guide

What to see in Chengdu

Seven stops make up the core of every Chengdu route. Honest recommendations based on what Muslim travelers from Southeast Asia and the Middle East actually value — built from HalalChinaTrips' on-the-ground experience in the region. For a longer list beyond these core stops, see our full guide to things to do in Chengdu.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
Chengdu's signature attraction and the reason most visitors add the city to their route. A morning visit gives the best chance of seeing pandas active in the bamboo enclosures, with red panda and conservation zones covered on the same walk. Our panda base visiting guide covers tickets, timing, and transport.
Dujiangyan Irrigation System
Dujiangyan Irrigation System
A 2,200-year-old water diversion project still in use today, set along the Min River about an hour outside the city. Half a day covers the dam structure, the riverside paths, and the Anlan cable bridge crossing.
Mount Qingcheng
Mount Qingcheng
A forested Taoist mountain next to Dujiangyan, often combined with it on the same day. Half a day covers the front mountain's temple paths and lookout points at a relaxed walking pace.
Wuhou Shrine
Wuhou Shrine
A Three Kingdoms-era memorial temple dedicated to statesman Zhuge Liang, set within quiet cypress gardens. Two to three hours covers the shrine halls and the adjoining Jinli Ancient Street entrance.
Jinli Ancient Street
Jinli Ancient Street
A restored Qing-dynasty-style lane next to Wuhou Shrine, lined with snack stalls, teahouses, and craft shops. Two to three hours covers the full street at an easy evening pace, lantern-lit after dark.
Kuanzhai Alley
Kuanzhai Alley
Three parallel Qing-dynasty lanes near the city center, showing Chengdu's courtyard architecture and slower teahouse culture. Two to three hours covers all three lanes, often paired with Wenshu Monastery and People's Park on the same route.
Chunxi Road & Taikoo Li
Chunxi Road & Taikoo Li
Chengdu's modern shopping and dining district, built around glass-fronted malls, cafés, and panda-themed street art. Two to three hours covers the main pedestrian streets, best visited in the evening when the lights come on.

Prayer planning in Chengdu
Unlike many other Muslim-friendly destinations in China, Chengdu has working mosques serving the local Hui and Uyghur communities, several within reach of the halal restaurants above. We can help plan your route around the nearest mosque, or arrange suitable private prayer space at your hotel and along the day's itinerary.

Best time to visit

When to go

Chengdu is open year-round. Here's what each season looks like — and when we recommend visiting.

Spring
Mar–May. Mild temperatures and blooming parks, with occasional light rain. A comfortable window for walking the ancient lanes and panda base.
Summer
Jun–Aug. Warm and humid in the city, with Mount Qingcheng running noticeably cooler. Good season for the Dujiangyan and Qingcheng day route.
Best season
Autumn
Sep–Nov. Clearer skies and comfortable temperatures, with the panda base and ancient streets at their most pleasant. Our top recommendation for a first visit to Chengdu.
Winter
Dec–Feb. Cool and often overcast, in keeping with Chengdu's naturally cloudy winter climate. Fewer visitors at the major sights, and teahouse culture comes into its own.
Not sure when to travel? Tell us your available dates. We'll advise on crowd levels, weather, and the best window for your group.

FAQ

Common questions about Chengdu

Quick answers for Muslim travelers planning a Chengdu trip.

Is halal food easy to find in Chengdu?
Yes. Chengdu has a long-established Hui Muslim community, with 40+ verified halal restaurants across the city — from Xinjiang grills to halal beef hot pot. For more options and locations, see our Chengdu halal food guide.
How many days do I need in Chengdu?
3–4 days works well for most groups: one day for the Panda Base and city highlights, one for Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng, and a spare day for Leshan or a slower city pace. See our Chengdu itinerary for Muslim families for a full day-by-day plan.
When is the best time to visit the Giant Panda Base?
Early morning, when pandas are most active around feeding time — we schedule it as the first stop of the day. Our panda base guide covers timing, tickets, and how to get there.
Can I combine Chengdu with Jiuzhaigou?
Yes — our 5-day Chengdu + Jiuzhaigou route above is one of our most popular Sichuan trips. Read our guide on getting from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou for the transport options.
Can I combine Chengdu with Zhangjiajie?
Yes. Flights and high-speed rail connect the two, and many groups pair Sichuan with the Zhangjiajie mountains. See our Chengdu to Zhangjiajie transport guide, or ask us to build the route for you.
