Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang and Furong Town: A 5-Day Route for Muslim Travelers

Last Updated on October 24, 2026 by Aaron Chen

Mountains first, then old towns — that is the rhythm. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain for the first three days, then a train southeast into Xiangxi for Fenghuang Ancient Town (riverside night views, Miao and Tujia culture) and Furong Town (waterfall). Five days covers all three without rushing.

This route works because the Zhang-Ji-Huai high-speed rail line connects the dots: Zhangjiajie West to Fenghuang Guzhencheng station in under an hour, with Furong reachable by car from either direction (~80 km from Zhangjiajie, ~55 km from Fenghuang). The practical challenge is not distance — it is fitting halal meals, prayer, luggage and transfer timing around scenic days and old-town nights.

The 5-Day Route

Day 4Train to FenghuangZhang-Ji-Huai line (~55 min, ~3 trains/day). Walk the old town, riverside night viewsStay overnight; check noodle shop status in advance; waterfall lights from 19:30
Day 5Furong Town → departPrivate transfer (~55 km, ~1.5 hr) or drive-through stop. Waterfall, old-town walk, then continue to airport or next cityFurong ticket ¥108 (3-day); pack snacks; depart via Zhangjiajie airport or Changsha

Adjusting the Order

The table shows the most common sequence: mountains first, Fenghuang overnight, Furong as a half-day stop on the way out. But it is not the only option:

  • Furong before Fenghuang: works if you are driving and want the waterfall before settling into Fenghuang for the night. The Furong waterfall night show (lights from 19:30) is worth seeing, but it means two overnight stays outside Zhangjiajie city.
  • Skip Furong: if your schedule is tight (4 days instead of 5), drop Furong and spend the extra time in Fenghuang. Furong is beautiful but the least essential of the three stops.
  • Two nights in Fenghuang: for travelers who want a slower pace, an extra night lets you explore the old town in daylight and see the riverside at night without rushing. This works especially well for families.

The best order depends on your exit point. If flying out of Zhangjiajie, do Fenghuang and Furong as a loop and return. If continuing to Changsha or another city, Fenghuang can be your last stop. For travelers flying from Kuala Lumpur, check the Zhangjiajie direct flight schedule first — it determines whether you start and end at the same airport.

Distances and Transfer Times

From → ToDistanceHowTime
Zhangjiajie → Fenghuang~170 kmZhang-Ji-Huai high-speed rail~55 min (+ station transfer at both ends)
Zhangjiajie → Furong Town~80 kmPrivate car (no direct train)~1.5–2 hours by road
Fenghuang → Furong Town~55 kmPrivate car~1–1.5 hours by road
Zhangjiajie Airport → downtown~10 kmTaxi or hotel pickup~20 min
Zhangjiajie downtown → Wulingyuan~35 kmTaxi or bus~40–50 min

The train is the simplest option for Zhangjiajie→Fenghuang. For Furong Town, there is no convenient train — a private car or arranged transfer is the practical choice, especially with luggage.

Halal Meals Across the Route

Halal food availability changes at each stop. Plan every dinner before you leave the hotel — do not improvise after a long scenic day.

  • Zhangjiajie city (Days 1–3): Lanzhou noodle shops and Northwest Chinese (qingzhen) restaurants in Yongding district. Verified options in the Zhangjiajie halal food guide. No halal food inside the national forest park or on Tianmen Mountain — pack lunch on both days.
  • Fenghuang (Day 4): Limited. A few noodle shops exist but their status changes — check before arrival. Nothing inside the old town is halal-verified. Details in the Fenghuang section of the Zhangjiajie-to-Fenghuang route guide.
  • Furong Town (Day 5): Nothing halal-verified. Pack food or eat before arriving. On trips we arrange, we pack halal lunches for the Furong stop.

The pattern across this entire route: breakfast at hotel, packed lunch on scenic/transfer days, dinner at a checked restaurant. This is normal practice for Muslim travelers in inland China — the meal planning is the trip planning.

Prayer Across 5 Days

Zhangjiajie has no mosque open to visiting tourists. Neither does Fenghuang or Furong Town. Prayer across this route is planned around the hotel room and the vehicle:

  • Fajr and Isha: at the hotel — straightforward every day.
  • Dhuhr: falls during scenic time on most days. A quiet bench, a clearing on the mountain path or a vehicle rest stop works. Carry a small prayer mat and a Qibla app.
  • Asr: often falls during descent or transfer. The vehicle or the hotel covers it.
  • Maghrib: in summer, this falls after you return from the scenic area. In winter, it comes earlier and may need planning mid-route — especially on transfer days between cities.

On our itineraries, the guide adjusts the day so the lunch-and-prayer break falls at a natural pause point. Building prayer windows into the schedule before the trip starts is what makes the difference.

Who This Route Fits

FAQ

How many days for Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang and Furong Town?

Five days is a practical minimum. Four works if you drop Furong Town. Three is too tight for all three destinations without exhausting the group.

Should I visit Fenghuang or Furong first?

Most travelers do Fenghuang first (easy by train from Zhangjiajie, worth an overnight for the riverside night views), then Furong as a half-day stop on the way out. The reverse works if you are driving and want the waterfall night show before settling into Fenghuang.

Is there halal food in Fenghuang or Furong Town?

Very limited. Fenghuang has a few noodle shops whose status changes — check before arrival. Furong Town has nothing halal-verified. Pack food for both, and plan serious meals in Zhangjiajie city before and after.

Is there a mosque along this route?

No. Zhangjiajie, Fenghuang and Furong Town have no mosque open to visiting tourists. Prayer is planned around the hotel room and the vehicle throughout.

Can families with elderly parents do this route?

Yes, with adjustments: skip Furong, add a rest day, choose cable-car routes over hiking, and finish scenic days by 15:00. The forest park and Tianmen Mountain both have assisted transport options (Bailong Elevator, cable car, in-park shuttle).
